Gas Content and Star Formation Thresholds in the Evolution of Spiral Galaxies

چکیده

The gas mass fraction of spiral galaxies is strongly correlated with the central surface brightness of their disks. There exist many dim galaxies with long gas consumption time scales and fg > 0.5. This resolves the gas consumption paradox. The surface density of gas follows the optical surface brightness, but does not vary by as large a factor. This is the signature of a critical density threshold for star formation. Such a mechanism seems to be responsible for the slow evolution of dim galaxies.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

Galex Observations of “passive Spirals” in the Cluster Cl 0024+17: Clues to the Formation of S0 Galaxies

We present new results from deep GALEX UV imaging of the cluster Cl 0024+17 at z ∼ 0.4. Rest-frame far UV emission is detected from a large fraction of so-called “passive spiral galaxies” –a significant population which exhibits spiral morphology with little or no spectroscopic evidence for ongoing star formation. This population is thought to represent infalling galaxies whose star formation h...

Cold Gas and Star Formation in Elliptical Galaxies

Elliptical galaxies outside dense clusters are observed to contain small amounts (relative to spiral galaxies) of cold interstellar gas. This review discusses the atomic gas, the molecular gas, and the dust in elliptical galaxies. Field elliptical galaxies contain about 0.01 to 0.1 of the cold interstellar matter content of spiral galaxies of similar luminosity, and support a low level of star ...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

The Star-formation Efficiency and Density of the Disks of Spiral Galaxies

For four well studied spiral galaxies (M33, M81, M100 and M101) we consider the dependencies of star formation rate (SFR) and star formation efficiency (SFE = SFR/Mgas) both on the radial distance R and on some kinematic parameters of galactic discs. To estimate SFR(R) we used a combined UV + FIR method based on the UV profiles corrected for the interstellar extinction presented by Boissier et ...
